Packaging Cost Planner

Compare the material costs of your own card or comic packaging recipes. Enter actual CAD purchases, including supply-delivery charges and tax, and the quantity each shipment uses. No prices are supplied.

Each recipe is an alternative for one shipment. A lower cost does not prove adequate protection or carrier acceptance. Check those separately before changing your packaging.

Fill at least one line in Recipe A. Leave unused lines entirely blank. Use up to four materials per recipe, such as a sleeve, backing, outer mailer or tape. Names are optional. Use the same unit for quantity bought and quantity used: pieces for counted items, or the same length unit for tape. Enter quantities with up to three decimal places and CAD amounts with up to two. Maximum per input: 1,000,000.

Enter each purchase cost only once per recipe. For mixed supply orders, allocate the purchase total, delivery and tax between the lines yourself without counting them twice. Do not count purchased supplies again as a separate shipping cost. This is cost allocation, not tax advice or a receipt tracker.

Use the amount actually paid or your own current quote, including any applicable charges. Blank excludes postage; enter 0 only if your actual postage cost is zero.

Optional: compare Recipe B

Leave Recipe B entirely blank to calculate Recipe A only. Enter costs independently; the two recipes are alternatives, not two purchases to add together.

This planner’s code calculates locally without sending or storing entries. Other website scripts are outside this statement. Supply outlay and consumed cost are shown separately.

How the allocation works

Material cost per shipment = supply purchase total × units used per shipment ÷ units bought. For example, quantities may be pieces, metres or centimetres, but both quantity fields on a line must use the same unit. The planner cannot check your units or whether your recipe protects the contents.

All arithmetic uses exact fractions. It does not round a unit price before multiplying. Displayed CAD values round to the nearest cent, with half cents rounded up. The exact total is rounded once; adding the displayed line amounts may differ by a cent. Recipe comparisons use the exact amounts, so a nonzero difference below half a cent may display as $0.00.

Remaining inventory is the unused portion of the entered supplies after one shipment. It is not cash returned to you. This allocation excludes selling fees, item purchase cost, labour, waste not included in your quantities, and other costs you have not entered. Entering 0 for a supply cost assigns it a zero cost for this comparison; it does not imply that replacements are free.
